HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 cc112-3W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many academic staff have been employed by the London College of Printing in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Brooke

The number of full-time academic staff employed by the London College of Printing for the academic year 1982–83 was 240. Part-time staff numbers are not available. Information on previous years' academic staff numbers is also not available.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students have been studying at the London College of Printing in the last 10 years for which figures are available on (a) a full-time course and (b) a part-time course.

Mr. Brooke

The number of students who attended the London College of Printing in each year for which information is readily available is as follows:

Full-time and sandwich students Part-time students
Day Evening only Total
1978–79 1,077 1,824 1,482 4,383
1979–80 1,001 2,018 1,312 4,331
1980–81 1,112 2,018 1,032 4,162
1981–82 1,051 1,744 1,059 3,854
1982–83 1,073 1,486 982 3,541
1983–84 1,172 1,566 1,067 3,805

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has any plans to increase the funding of the London College of Printing.

Mr. Brooke

The London College of Printing is maintained by the Inner London education authority and it is for the authority to determine the budgets of its institutions. As regards the allocation in respect of the college from within the capped advanced further education pool, my right hon. Friend expects to receive advice this autumn on the allocations for 1985–86 from the National Advisory Body for Local Authority Higher Education. The allocation for 1984–85 for the London College of Printing implied a cash reduction of 5.4 per cent. compared with the 1983–84 allocation, but was none the less well above average in terms of unit of resource. There can be little doubt that the institution has historically been very expensive.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will list those courses which are provided by the London College of Printing which are not available elsewhere in the United Kingdom;

(2) if he will list those courses which are provided by the London College of Printing which are not available elsewhere within the Inner London education authority.

Mr. Brooke

I am writing to my hon. Friend.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the annual rate of finance of the London College of Printing in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available.

Mr. Brooke

A separate expenditure return in respect of the London College of Printing was not made by the ILEA until the financial year 1982–83. The only available figures are for that year. The total current expenditure of the London College of Printing was £8.2 million.
