HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 c113W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he is satisfied that universities are being allocated sufficient resources to enable them to produce adequate numbers of trained personnel to meet the future needs of the expanding high technology industries.

Sir Keith Joseph

Substantial increases in the supply of graduates with high technology related qualifications are projected on present plans. The bulk of these increases will occur in the public sector of higher education. The Government are currently considering whether these increases are sufficient, and I have held discussions with, among others, the chairman of the UGC and the chairman of the Engineering Council. A committee chaired by my hon. Friend the Member for Coventry, South-West (Mr. Butcher) is investigating skill shortages in the information technology area and will report shortly.

To graduate output must be added postgraduate students coming from IT conversion courses provided through my Department's IT in HE initiative — an additional 900 this year and over 1,000 in 1984–85, more than half of whom will come from the universities.
