HC Deb 09 July 1984 vol 63 cc393-4W
Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the loss of moorland to ploughing and afforestation per year in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

It is estimated that new forestry planting within the uplands in Scotland has averaged 19,000 hectares a year over the last three years. The bulk of this will have been on moorland. No figures are available for the loss of land to ploughing unconnected with afforestation.
