HC Deb 09 July 1984 vol 63 cc438-9W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he intends to take to meet the demand on the housing market.

Sir George Young

The great majority of people wish to own their own homes. Since the Government came to power in 1979, over 1½ million more people have become home owners. Over 700,000 sales have been made by the public sector, in addition to the large demand which has been met by the private housing market. The present strong performance of the private housebuilding industry, and the steady availability of mortgage funds, should enable the growth in home ownership to continue.
