Mr. Wilson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer on how many occasions Customs and Excise cover was sought for aircraft landings at Dundee airport in 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively; and in each case what was the number of requests granted and the number refused, respectively.

Mr. Hayhoe

The required information is as follows:

  • 1981 Requested on 26 occasions. Granted 25. Refused 1.
  • 1982 Requested on 29 occasions. Granted 25. Refused 4.
  • 1983 Requested on 173 occasions. Granted 166. Refused 7.

Mr. Wilson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will outline the conditions under which Customs and Excise cover is granted at Dundee airport.

Mr. Hayhoe

Customs attendance is provided on a concessional basis for the clearance of business flights, both outwards and return, made by United Kingdom resident business people. A simplified clearance arrangement is also provided for outward flights which comply with certain conditions. Additionally clearance may be granted on an ad hoc basis for particular flights on humanitarian grounds or which are otherwise in either the national or regional interest. Adequate prior notice is normally required.
