HC Deb 09 July 1984 vol 63 c423W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list all the airports in the United Kingdom which have duty-free shops, the value of the sales from each of them for each of the last five years, and the numbers of Customs and Excise officials employed at each of them.

Mr. Hayhoe

Duty-free shops have been established at the following airports:

Aberdeen Glasgow
Belfast London (Gatwick)
Birmingham London (Heathrow)
Bristol Manchester
Cardiff-Wales Newcastle
East Midlands Prestwick
Edinburgh Stansted

The value of sales from duty-free shops is a commercial matter and the figures are not available.

At all but the largest airports Customs and Excise staff are required to cover all official duties arising and are not specifically allocated to the control of duty-free shops. Annual manpower costs are estimated to range from about a half of one officer at the smallest airports to just under seven at Heathrow.
