HC Deb 09 July 1984 vol 63 cc419-20W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the level of capital spending in Wales in the period until 1986.

Mr. Peter Rees

Net public sector capital expenditure in Wales is as follows:

£ million cash
£ million
1979–80 461
1980–81 520
1981–82 473
1982–83 542
1983–84 624
1984–85 537

As these figures are net of receipts from sales of assets and repayments of loans, some of which have increased rapidly, they are not necessarily indicative of the level of or changes in gross capital expenditure. In particular, the net figures make no allowance for expenditure financed by income from sales of council houses, which rose from £8 million in 1979–80 to £68 million in 1983–84, with a similar amount assumed in the expenditure plans for 1984–85.

Comprehensive figures for private sector capital investment are not available.
