Mr. James Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, in view of the fact that the proposed closure of the bridge simulator (CASSIM) at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, because of lack of finance, would leave Wales without any similar facilities for maritime training, if he will assist with the funding; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. TebbitMy Department has already spent £3 million on the simulator. Its retention at UWIST would be costly, mainly because UWIST has not attracted enough users. I am considering a number of options, including alternative locations, which might attract more users and hence the cost to the taxpayers reduced. It would be a condition that the facilities would remain available for users from all parts of the United Kingdom. UWIST and the other parties concerned will be fully consulted before reaching a decision.
