Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the visit of President J. R. Jayawardene to the United Kingdom, detailing which members of his Department are involved in official discussions with the President.

Mr. Whitney

President Jayawardene paid a private visit to London from 23 to 29 June. He had talks with my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister. My right hon. and learned Friend was pleased to be able to call on the President, as was my right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office. We were accompanied on these occasions by a private secretary and a representative from the relevant geographical Department.

Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will estimate the cost of offical hospitality provided for the President of Sri Lanka during his recent visit to London; and if he will give a breakdown between separate functions.

Mr. Whitney

President Jayawardene paid a private visit to London from 23 to 29 June. The only official hospitality was a dinner given in his honour by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister. The estimated cost of the dinner was £1,740.
