HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 cc24-5W
Mr. Rowe

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Britons are currently registered with his Department as resident in (a) Spain, (b) Portugal, (c) France, (d) Greece, (e) the middle east, (f) the far east, (g) the United States of America and (h) Canada.

Mr. Whitney

Consular registration is voluntary so far as the British Government are concerned and the take-up varies markedly from country to country. We actively encourage registration in areas of actual or potential danger or instability. In Spain and Portugal the local authorities require foreign nationals to register with their consulates before they can be given resident status. The statistics requested by my hon. Friend are as follows:

Number
Spain 39,322
France 2,446
Middle East 52,155
United States of America 237
Portugal 6,336
Number
Greece 4,840
Far East 3,757
Canada Nil
