asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the percentage of pre-school children receiving nursery education in Scotland and each local authority in the latest year.

The following table shows the number of all pre-school children attending education authority nursery schools at September 1983, expressed as a percentage of three and four-year-olds.

The latest year for which information on nursery pupils by age is available is 1982 and the relevant figures are set out in the following table. More recent information will not be available until the detailed results of the 1983 school census are processed later this summer.
