HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 cc26-7W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps his Department is taking to further more research into the causes of acid rain following the Royal Society's study, "The Nitrogen Cycle of the United Kingdom."

Mr. Ancram

An expanded programme of research into the causes and effects of acid rain in Scotland is being undertaken at a cost of about £400,000 this year. This is part of a United Kingdom research programme of some £1.8 million, and represents an increase of some 30 per cent. over the previous year.

Included in this research programme are projects at the Macaulay Institute for Soils Research, Aberdeen, and elsewhere which touch directly on the matters addressed by the Royal Society's study, "The Nitrogen Cycle of the United Kingdom."
