HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 cc73-4W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish a table showing for each of the last three years, gross annual earnings of dentists within the National Health Service, in brackets of £10,000 up to £200,000, and over £200,000, respectively.

Mr. John Patten

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to dentists working in the general dental service. The information which is readily available relates to the gross earnings, from which dentists have to meet their expenses, of dentists in Great Britain included in the calculations of the dental rates study group. This excludes assistants—whose earnings are included in those of their employers — and certain other dentists; for example, those who have been on NHS lists for less than a year. Detailed information on gross earnings of over £100,000 a year is not readily available. The available information is set out in the following table:

£ 1981 1982 1983
1–9,999 1,032 1,016 989
10,000–19,999 1,296 1,086 1,025
