Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the number of crimes and offences made known to the police in each year since 1980 in both Tayside and Scotland in the following categories: (a) non-sexual crimes against the person, (b) crimes involving dishonesty and (c) culpable and reckless conduct; and what has been the percentage rate of detection in each instance.

Culpable and reckless conduct is included in the serious assault category in the criminal statistics maintained by my Department and is not separately identifiable. For 1980–82 the other information requested is given in table 8(b) of the reports by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland for 1980 (Cmnd. 8275), 1981 (Cmnd. 8575) and 1982 (Cmnd. 8953). Provisional figures for 1983 are set out in the table below:
