HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 c54W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what recent representations he has received from individuals and organisations regarding the right to buy being extended to the tenants of elderly persons' accommodation in the public sector.

Sir George Young

In general, tenants of non-sheltered housing for the elderly already have the right to buy if they qualify under the normal rules. Such dwellings are exempted only if the landlord has applied to the Secretary of State and been granted a determination under paragraph 5 of schedule 1 to the 1980 Act.

The Government's intention to change the present arrangements was announced and approved by the House on 21 December.—[Vol. 51, c. 442–541] Since then we have received seven representations. one from an hon. Member, four from members of the public, and two from local authority interests.
