Mr. Jim Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Transport on what basis he will decide which district council will be designated as the local authority to maintain motorways in the present metropolitan county areas in the event of the abolition of the metropolitan county councils.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe Department is consulting metropolitan district councils through which motorways run. Decisions must also be related to the lengths of motorway involved, the location of junctions, and tile availability of maintenance compound facilities.
