Mr. William Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what advice his Department has given to the Western health and social services board regarding the number of hospital beds in the Londonderry area; and whether he envisages the closure of any of the hospitals in Londonderry.

Mr. Chris Patten

[pursuant to his reply, 19 January 1984, c. 321]: No specific advice has been given by the Department of Health and Social Services to the Western Health and Social Services Board regarding the number of years if more convenient; where the courses were held; and what was the cost in each year of the accommodation, travel and the total cost to public funds.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 19 January 1984, c. 322]: The numbers of stage I and stage II youth training courses held by the Western Education and Library Board during the last three financial years together with the total costs involved have been as follows:

Stage I courses, consisting of between 50 and 70 hours tuition, are run over a period of approximately three months and include two residential weekends. The stage II course of over 100 hours tuition ran over a period of approximately eight months and included three residential weekends. The courses were based at Bayview training centre, Londonderry, Omagh youth and teachers' centre, Fairview (young adult centre) Enniskillen, Strabane teachers' centre, Enniskillen teachers' centre and Limavady library. A detailed breakdown of expenditure could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
