HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c549W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the number of working days lost during the period of pre-operative invalidity through heart disease in (a) England and (b) the area covered by the South-East Thames regional health authority in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. John Patten

I regret this information is not available.

Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the extent of heart disease per million of the population in (a) England and (b) the area covered by the South-East Thames regional health authority.

Mr. John Patten

The available data relate to deaths and to patients treated in hospital. It is not possible to estimate the total extent of heart disease from this information, since not all patients received hospital treatment. Following are the figures for deaths and hospital discharge rates in 1981, the latest year for which they are available.

Heart Diseases
(ICD categories 390–398, 410–414 and 415–429)
Deaths per million population Estimated NHS hospital discharge rates per million
England 3,818 0.592
South-East Thames region 4,000 0.625
