HL Deb 17 January 1984 vol 446 c1038WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware that:

  1. (A) On 20th July 1977, Dr. John Gilbert in the House of Commons (col. 608) stated that US forces had defence facilities at more than 100 locations in this country;
  2. (B) On 3rd May 1983, in the House of Lords, Lord Belstead suggested that Lord Jenkins of Putney had thought up the figure of 100 or more and had then tried to justify what he (Lord Belstead) called "false allegations"; and
  3. (C) Lord Belstead gave a figure of 60 bases and facilities; whether they will say what happend to the other 40; and whether they will withdraw the assertion of "false allegations".

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces (Lord Trefgarne)

I cannot answer for statements made by the last Labour Administration. The figure of about 60 US bases and facilities given by my noble friend Lord Belstead was, and remains, correct.
