HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc118-9W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the figures in 1979 and in each subsequent year to 1983 of all young people in Scotland below the age of 30 years and of young people in the age groups 16 to 17 and 18 to 30 years, respectively, who were in receipt of supplementary benefit (a) as residents in board and lodgings, (b) as non-boarders living alone, (c) as non-householders and (d) as of no fixed abode.

Dr. Boyson

Information for householders and non-householders aged 16–29 is given in the following table. It is not possible to provide separate figures either for the 16–17 age group, or for those resident in board and lodging accommodation, as the numbers involved in the sample from which the information is obtained are too small for reliable estimates to be made. No information is available on the number of claimants of "no fixed abode".

Scotland: Supplementary Benefit Recipients Aged 16–29
Householders Non-householders
December 1979 21,000 38,000
December 1980 27,000 49,000
December 1981 35,000 71,000
December 1982 42,000 92,000
