HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c78W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, following his reply to the hon. Member for Kingston upon Hull, North on 18 November, Official Report, c. 617, if he will take steps to rectify the disproportionate cut in Roman Catholic teacher training in the north west.

Mr. Brooke

In recognition of the concern expressed to him about the proportion of Roman Catholic teacher training provision located in the north-west, my right hon. Friend earlier offered to consider advancing part of the build-up in primary PGCE places which he would have expected to see made at the Liverpool institute of higher education later in the decade. The allocation of an additional 20 primary PGCE places to the institute has now been agreed for 1984, following a proposal to that effect by the rector, forwarded by the Catholic Education Council.
