HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc53-4W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many manufacturing jobs in Wales have been lost since May 1979; and in what sectors of manufacturing industries these losses have been sustained.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information on net change in employment levels based on estimates of the number of employees in employment compiled by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment indicate that between June 1979 and June 1983, the latest available figures, there was a decrease of 103,000 in the number of employees in employment in the manufacturing sector in Wales — 3,000 in food, drink and tobacco; 7,000 in coal, petroleum and chemical products; 40,000 in metal manufacture; 31,000 in engineering and allied industries; 8,000 in textile, leather and clothing and 13,000 in other manufacturing industries. These figures do not take account of those who are self employed.

Note: Sector decreases do not add up to the total for manufacturing industry as a whole because of rounding.

Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many manufacturing jobs have been created in Wales since May 1979; and in what sectors of manufacturing industries these jobs are located.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Comprehensive information is not available. However, 46,700 manufacturing jobs are promised from allocations of Government factories and offers of selective financial assistance accepted in the period May 1979 to November 1983. A breakdown by industry sectors can only be provided in detail for projects accepting offers of selective financial assistance and is as follows:

Numbers
Electrical Engineering 8,150
Instrument and Mechanical Engineering 3,360
Metal Manufacture and Metal Goods 3,121
Food, Drink and Tobacco 2,450
Vehicles 2,250
Textiles, Clothing and Footwear 2,143
Paper Printing and Publishing 1,660
Chemical and Allied Industries 1,520
Other Sectors Combined 3,627

Additional jobs have been created without the involvement of Government factories and Selective financial assistance; and the figures do not include the self-employed.

Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many service industry jobs have been created in Wales since 1979.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards
