§ Mr. Foulkesasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the current contributions in each of the following categories to the United Kingdom exchequer from Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man: (a) defence, (b) foreign representation, (c) custodial treatment of offenders, (d) health care in United Kingdom hospitals, (e) higher education services and (f) all other services provided for the islands.
§ Mr. MellorThe Isle of Man makes a voluntary annual contribution towards the costs of defence and overseas representation which amounted to £810,192 in the financial year 1982–83. No regular contribution is made by the Channel Islands but in 1982 Jersey made a gift of £5 million towards the cost of the recovery and rehabilitation of the Falkland Islands, and Guernsey made a gift of £100,000 towards the Falkland Islands' Government's costs in providing sheltered accommodation for the elderly.
In the financial year 1982–83, Jersey paid £323,409 for the custodial treatment of offenders; Guernsey paid £141,169 and the Isle of Man £128,580. For the academic year 1982–83, Jersey contributed £877,043, Guernsey 68W £726,008 and the Isle of Man £984,536 in relation to the higher education of island students in the United Kingdom.
Figures in respect of other services are not collated centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost but such services normally involve either a reciprocal arrangement between the United Kingdom and the Islands, or a repayment arrangement.
