HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c84W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many objections have been raised in each of the past four years against applications for a licence under the Employment Agencies Act 1973, together with the number of successful applications.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The number of objections received is not available. The number of fresh licences granted in each of the past four years is as follows:

Number
1980 1,749
1981 1,754
1982 1,941
1983 2,056

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the annual income to the Exchequer in each of the past four years from licence fees under the Employment Agencies Act 1973.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The income from licence fees, which is designed to recover the full cost of operating the Act, has been as follows:

Year £
1979–80 694,552
1980–81 733,221
1981–82 739,596
1982–83 777,378

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been annual cost to the Exchequer in each of the past four years of operating the Employment Agencies Act 1973.

Mr. Peter Morrison

None.

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will authorise the issue of one licence per company under the Employment Agencies Act 1973 instead of one per trade naming branch or trade name.

Mr. Peter Morrison

No. The 1973 Act specifically requires a licence to be issued for each of the "premises" or branches from which an employment agency is run. Licences are not issued on the basis of "trade names".
