HC Deb 29 February 1984 vol 55 cc234-5W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total number of council homes now sold by the Welwyn Hatfield district council; what percentage of the housing stock this represents; how many applications are being processed and at what stage they are; and how these sales and potential sales compare with national figures.

Sir George Young

Estimates by the district council of the total number of council houses sold from April 1979 to September 1983, including right to buy sales, and of its dwelling stock at 1 April 1983 were included in the table placed in the Library following the reply given by my hon. Friend the Minister for Housing and Construction to my hon. Friend the Member for Mid-Staffordshire (Mr. Heddle) on Tuesday 20 December 1983 at c. 184. The council reported that 1,594 applications under the right to buy had been admitted but the sales not completed at 30 September 1983.

During the same period, it is estimated that 498,000 dwellings were sold by English local authorities, equivalent to 10.7 per cent. of the authorities' dwelling stock at 1 April 1983; 333,000 of the sales were under the right to buy. A further 127,000 admitted applications under the right to buy were awaiting completion at 30 September 1983.
