HC Deb 28 February 1984 vol 55 c157W
46. Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of families in Coventry is in receipt of supplementary benefit; and how this compares with May 1979.

Dr. Boyson

Information collected on the numbers of people receiving supplementary benefit does not distinguish between families and single people. In December 1983 a total of 25,000 people under pensionable age in Coventry were in receipt of supplementary benefit compared with 11,200 in May 1979. The 1981 census showed that there were 42,000 families in Coventry.
