asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what were the numbers of civil servants employed in the Ordnance Survey in April 1979; and why it is proposed in "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1984–85 and 1986–87", Cmnd. 9143, to increase the number of civil servants in this Department.

The number of civil servants employed in Ordnance Survey 1 April 1979 was 3,630, By 1 April 1984 this number will have decreased by 815 to 2,815. During 1984–85 the Directorate of Overseas Surveys, which is at present a specialist unit of the Overseas Development Administration, will transfer to Ordnance Survey and as a result the strength of Ordnance Survey will increase by 133 to 2,948 by 1 April 1985. Thereafter it is planned to reduce the Ordnance Survey to 2,920 civil servants by 1 April 1987.
