HC Deb 27 February 1984 vol 55 c28W
Mr. Radice

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average cost of spending per pupil for 1983–1984 and 1984–85 in cost terms contained in "The Government's Public Expenditure White Paper", Cmnd. 9143, using 1982–83 as the base year.

Sir Keith Joseph

Estimated current expenditure per pupil on primary and secondary education in 1983–84 in cost terms, taking 1982–83 as 100, is 104.2. No comparable estimate can be made for 1984–85 because of the margin of £660 million for local authority expenditure within the Government's plans which has not been allocated to services as I explained in my answer of c.313–14 on 16 February to my hon. Friend the Member of for Saffron Walden (Mr. Haselhurst).
