HC Deb 24 February 1984 vol 54 c662W
Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will estimate the number of accidents due to (a) glass pane, (b) window pane, and (c) door (to room), invisible glass in (i) Essex and (ii) England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I have been asked to reply.

My Department operates the home accident surveillance system, which collects information—from a rolling sample of 20 hospitals — about accidents occurring in and around the home. This information suggests that annual figures for home accidents involving hospital treatment in England and Wales are of the following order:

Figures
(a) glass panes 2,000
(b) window panes 10,000
(c) doors (to rooms) involving glass 15,000

The information does not distinguish between clear and opaque glass; nor are separate figures available for Essex.
