HC Deb 22 February 1984 vol 54 c561W
43. Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, following events in the Lebanon, he will now consider visiting Damascus to discuss the issue of a just peace in the middle east with the Syrian Government.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

I visited Syria on 11–12 January and held talks with President Asad and Mr. Khaddam about ways of making progress towards negotiated solutions to the crisis in Lebanon and to the other conflicts in the region. I have no present plans to visit Damascus again.
