HC Deb 21 February 1984 vol 54 cc506-7W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the treatment rate per million for new end stage renal failure patients by home dialysis, hospital dialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and transplant for Scotland and for each health authority; what is the estimated length of life for end stage renal failure patients who receive none of the above treatment; if he will give the estimated number of deaths from end stage renal failure in each of the above authorities which could have been avoided if such treatment had been provided; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John MacKay

In 1981, the latest date for which figures are available centrally, 141 new end-stage renal failure patients commenced treatment in Scotland, giving a treatment rate of 28.65 per million of the population for such patients. Information is not recorded centrally about the type of treatment received nor the area of residence of each patient. It is not possible to estimate how long such patients might live if they do not receive treatment.

Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, in view of the improved prognosis for the treatment of end stage renal failure, he will take steps to provide facilities for 45 to 50 new end stage renal failure cases per million; and if he will make a statement.
