§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, in the light of revelations about inhuman working conditions in the Thai knitting industry, he will consider banning the import of Thai knitwear.
§ Mr. Channon[pursuant to the reply, 16 February 1984, c. 316]: Regulations of factory working conditions is a matter for the Thai authorities, and I understand that the alleged conditions to which my hon. Friend refers may be illegal under Thai law. Any attempt to reduce trade with a developing country would be likely to worsen rather than improve the standard of living.
