HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 cc379-80W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what level of investment was achieved by the textile industry in 1983; what are the prospects for 1984; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

[pursuant to the reply, 17 February 1984, c. 348]: At 1980 prices seasonally adjusted, investment by the textile industry in the first nine months of 1983, the latest period for which figures are available, was £71 million.

Recent reports of improved company results suggest that the textile industry is pulling out of the recession. If this trend can be sustained I would expect it to be reflected in increased investment in due course.
