asked the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of heavy lorries inspected in the past year has been overloaded; and how many prosecutions have taken place.

Of the 224,483 lorries inspected by the Department's traffic examiners in the year to 30 September 1983, 65,179 were selected for weighing, of which 13,388 (20.4 per cent.) were found to be overloaded. Some 8,583 prosecutions for overloading were taken in this period.
