HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 cc407-8W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will specify the number of nuclear magnetic resonance body scanners in use in the National Health Service in Scotland and their location by health board area.

Mr. John MacKay

Nuclear magnetic resonance body scanners are in use at Aberdeen and Edinburgh royal infirmaries; a third machine is to be installed at the Southern general hospital, Glasgow, later this year.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in how many instances in the past year he has been notified of the deferring of development of nuclear magnetic resonance body scanners within the National Health Service because of financial restrictions.

Mr. John MacKay

None.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the capital and revenue expenditure for providing a nuclear magnetic resonance whole body scanner within the National Health Service.

Mr. John MacKay

Current prices for whole body scanners are in the region of £275,000 to £550,000. Annual running costs are up to £100,000 for each operational unit.
