§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the unemployment figures of the Kirkby and Prescot travel-to-work areas by age, sex and duration of unemployment for the latest date for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Alan ClarkKirkby and Prescot are in the Liverpool travel-to-work area. Unemployment figures are available for the jobcentre areas within the travel-to-work area. The following tables give the information for unemployed claimants in the Kirkby and Prescot jobcentre areas on 12 January. The figures for males aged 60 and over are affected by the provisions announced in the 1983 Budget; by January 1984 it was estimated that, nationally, about 161,800 had been relieved of the need to sign on.

§ Mr. Tony Banksasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons were registered as unemployed, or in receipt of unemployment benefit, in each of his Department's offices in Greater London in May 1979 and the most recent convenient date for which figures are available.
§ Mr. Alan ClarkThe following table gives, for the areas specified, the numbers registered as unemployed in May 1979 and the numbers of unemployed claimants in January 1984. The figures include school leavers and are not seasonally adjusted.
The comparisons are affected by the change in the basis of the unemployment count in October 1982 and the 1983 Budget provisions which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on in order to receive supplementary benefit or national insurance credits. The effect of the Budget provisions nationally was about 0.5 per cent.; estimates of the effect at local level are not available.
