HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 cc310-1W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what facilities there are for the education of the teenager and adult (a) autistic and (b) deaf, in the north-west region of England.

Mr. Dunn

There are no schools maintained by local education authorities in the north-west region which cater specifically for autistic children of secondary school age but such provision is available at an independent school at Southport (Peterhouse School). Local education authorities often find it possible, however, to provide for children who are autistic, or have autistic tendencies, in schools for children with moderate or severe learning difficulties or in special units at ordinary schools for children with communication difficulties. There are five special schools in the region which cater for deaf children.

Some provision in response to demand from young people and adults in either or both of these groups may also be made in general institutions of further, higher or adult education in the region, but the Department does not collect information in relation to such provision.
