asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people are in prison for refusal to pay fines or for other offences of a purely financial nature.

Mr. Mellor

In recent months there have been on average between 800 and 900 fine defaulters in prison department establishments in England and Wales. These figures include those in default of payment of compensation orders and costs.
