HC Deb 15 February 1984 vol 54 c191W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information regarding current compliance with the Sunday trading laws is being considered by his advisory group; and if he can yet estimate when it will be able to report.

Mr. Mellor

The Department's evidence to the Committee of Inquiry into proposals to amend the Shops Acts contained information about proceedings taken under the Shops Act 1950 from 1979 until 1982. As I stated in my reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Southend, East (Mr. Taylor) on 9 February at c.697, my right hon. and learned Friend expects to receive the committee's report later in the year.

Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from each chief constable as to the enforcement of the criminal law regarding Sunday trading; and if he will make a statement on the substance of the report, with particular reference to the enforcement practice and procedures revealed therein.

Mr. Hurd

The duty of enforcing the provisions of the Shops Act 1950 is placed by the Act on local authorities.
