HC Deb 15 February 1984 vol 54 c198W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest unemployment totals, both in numbers and in percentages, for the towns of Falmouth, Camborne and Redruth; and if he has any new initiatives to announce to improve the employment potential in those towns.

Mr. Alan Clark

In January 1984 the number of unemployed claimants in the Falmouth, Redruth and Camborne jobcentre areas were 2,491, 1,925, 1,407 respectively. The unemployment rates for the Falmouth and Redruth (which includes Camborne) travel to work areas were 21.8 per cent. and 17.6 per cent. respectively.

There are signs that the Government's policies are succeeding in establishing the economic conditions which will help industries become more competitive and start to expand. In the meantime we are continuing to protect those hardest hit through our special employment and training measures.
