HC Deb 15 February 1984 vol 54 cc230-1W
Mr. Bowen Wells

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will institute an inquiry into the statistical basis used in formulating policy and in preparing replies to hon. Members about levels of expenditure in district health authorities;

(2) if he will take steps to require the East Hertfordshire district health authority to compile statistical information about its expenditure on a basis comparable with other districts;

(3) what statistical information he routinely requires from regional health authorities; and what steps he takes to ensure that such information is provided on a basis that enable comparisons to be made between regions.

Mr. John Patten

District and regional health authorities compile and submit a wide range of statistics on a basis which permits comparison. The steering group on health services information is currently completing an extensive review of the statistical information needed by NHS management and the Department, and in doing so is paying full regard to the importance of securing compatible data. The steering group will shortly be submitting to my right hon. Friend its recommendations on financial information.

I understand that my hon. Friend has a particular point in mind in relation to information provided about health services locally, and I shall discuss this fully with him when we meet shortly.
