asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether the number of untried prisoners in each prison in Scotland has increased over the last 10 years; and how many there were in each prison in Scotland in January 1984.

Information is not available in the form requested, but the average daily remand population—that is, including those convicted awaiting sentence—increased from 597 in 1983 to 844 in 1982. The number of remand inmates in Scottish penal establishments on 3 January 1984 was 766 as shown in the table.
