Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was achieved in the recent Antarctic mineral regime negotiations in Washington; and if he will make a statement about likely developments in this field.

Mr. Whitney

The negotiations in Washington provided a further opportunity for exploratory discussions over the possible nature of an Antarctic minerals regime. No conclusions were reached and further consultations will be held in Tokyo in May.
