asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will compare current and capital local government expenditure in 1974–75 with 1982–83 in actual and percentage terms.

Current expenditure, on the basis shown in table 1.9 of the 1983 Public Expenditure White Paper, Cmnd 8789, grew by 226 per cent. between 1974–75 and 1982–83 estimated outturn. Capital spending declines by 23.3 per cent. That figure is depressed by receipts from sales of council houses and other assets. Over the same period the GDP deflator rose by 190 per cent.
