HC Deb 09 February 1984 vol 53 c729W
43. Mr. Foster

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the latest estimated average cost in terms of lost tax and increased benefit from a person losing their job and registering as unemployed.

Mr. Moore

Additional expenditures associated with unemployment depend on the family circumstances of those becoming unemployed. But on average, extra expenditure on benefits and on associated administration is currently estimated for 1984–85 to be about £1,950 a year for each person becoming unemployed.

Changes in tax revenue depend on the causes of the unemployment and there is a wide range of possible effects. No single estimate can be given.
