asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider amending legislation so as to ease the restrictions on building societies lending to housing associations and co-operatives; and if he will make a statement.

As part of its general review of building society legislation, the Government are considering proposals to enable the societies to play a fuller part in supporting the provision of new housing. We intend to publish consultative proposals in due course.
