HC Deb 08 February 1984 vol 53 cc621-2W
Mr. Patrick Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice he has given to the University Grants Committee about the criteria used in the allocation of research grants by it; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

Grants for specific pieces of research are the responsibility of the research councils. The University Grants Committee does not identify provision for research separately in its allocation of general recurrent grant, although other grants — for example for "new blood" posts—may be research-related. My right hon. Friend has asked the committee to consider whether there should be greater specificity of funding for research within recurrent grant as part of its current strategy review, the results of which the committee expects to submit to my right hon. Friend in the summer.
