§ Mr. Skinnerasked the Secretary of State for Energy what pilot or research projects his Department is currently supporting in the following areas of alternative industrial uses for coal: (a) liquefaction, (b) gasification, (c) combined heat and power and (d) fluidised combustion.
§ Mr. Giles ShawMy Department is currently supporting the following activities related to alternative industrial uses of coal:—
- (a) Liquefaction
- (i) the design of the NCB's 2½ tonne/day coal liquefaction pilot plant, with the offer of support for construction.
- (ii) the design and construction of a 24 kg/day small process development unit at Essen under the auspices of the IEA for the pyrolysis of coal to oil and gas.
- (b) Gasification
- (i) an engineering design study of a commercial scale power station using the BGC/slagging gasifier.

- (c) Combined Heat and Power the demonstration of anindustrial CHP installation using a coal fired fiuidised bed.
- (d) Fiuidised Combustion
- (i) operation of the pressurised fluidised bed facility at Grimethorpe under the IEA programme.
- (ii) an engineering design study of commercial scale power station using a pressurised fluidised bed boiler.
