HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c550W
31. Mr. Fatchett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the level of actual and proposed financial support for university extra-mural departments for the academic years 1983–84, 1984–85, 1985–86 and 1986–87 under regulation 18 of the Education (Grant) Regulations 1983; and if he will assess the likely impact of the proposed level of financial support on the provision of adult education.

Mr. Brooke

The extra-mural departments will receive grants totalling £5.6 million in the academic year 1983–84. Under present plans and at current pay and price levels it is intended that the extra-mural departments should receive £5.4 million in the academic years 1984–85, £5.1 million in 1985–86 and £4.8 million in 1986–87. Generally, we expect them to be able to maintain programmes of courses at current levels by raising fee levels to students able to pay more and by mounting provision in the most cost effective way.
