HC Deb 07 February 1984 vol 53 c574W
59. Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the socio-economic grouping distribution for car occupant casualties involved in road traffic accidents in the United Kingdom during 1982.

Mrs. Chalker

Routine personal injury road accident reports do not include SEG information. However, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory receive reports from coroners and procurators fiscal covering some 70 per cent. of car occupants who die within 12 hours of an accident in Great Britain. TRRL have provided the following provisional figures for 1982:

Number
Upper middle class 50
Middle class 76
Lower middle class 271
Skilled 235
Semi-skilled or unskilled 266
Student 74
Housewife 199
Retired 92
Others or not known 66
All reports 1,329

There were in total 2,443 car occupants killed in 1982, including those who survive more than 12 hours but less than 30 days—the usual definition.
